Report from the American Legion National Legislative Council

Conngress has delivered some big wins this week for veterans. Three major VA reform bills have cleared the Senate unanimously: Appeals Modernization (H.R.2288), the Choice Program funding fix (S.114), and just last night the "Colmery/Forever GI Bill" (H.R.3218).  The latter two are now on their way to the president’s desk and Appeals Modernization is expected to clear the House in September for the president to sign.

What wonderful achievements! Especially H.R.3218 named after the Legion's Past National Commander Colmery, the principal architect of the original GI Bill, and it speaks to what we have done, and continue to do for this nation and her veterans.

Turning to the Legion Coin bill, between July 28 and September 5, most U.S. senators and representatives will be on recess in their home districts to meet with constituents. So, now is the time for you to visit your elected officials' local offices.

Many of you have fulfilled your duties and already contacted your respective Members of Congress urging their support of this most important matter. Many of you have been successful.  As of today, the House bill (H.R. 2519) has 269 cosponsors and the Senate bill (S.1182) has 73. If your Member has already signed on, you can thank them not only for that, but also for the three big wins listed above.

The easiest way to check current cosponsors is on Congress.gov. Here are the links for both bills organized alphabetically by state:

(The good news for Centeral Ohio is that the House bill is supported by Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, and Congressmen, Pat Tiberi & Steve Stivers and the Seante bill is supported by both Senators Portman and Brown.)

Local Veterans in Need

Rob Goza, Robert Dutro Post 486 in Groveport, and his family have suffered big losses due to the flooding in Pickerington area.  He currently needs man power to help wipe down the inside of the House so he can bring his family back home. His house is far from restored but this is a critical step in which he needs help. I have his cell number and anyone wanting to donate some of their time and labor can contact me directly either by FB Messenger or my cell# (614)284-8714.  He needs help ASAP!

Secondly, another member John Kushner also lost big time.  Not only his home but his business, so he needs help. I am not in contact with him but Rick Compton of 486 is.  Let's get the word out to the masses for a District "Call to Action".

12th District Author

Our own, Past District Commander, Pete Margaritis, has a new book being released in August.

Twenty-Two On Peleliu is the story of a local "old breed Marine", George Peto and the four campaigns in the Pacific during WWII that he participated in.  This is the forth book written by Pete about WWII, the other three were about the war in Europe.  All of Pete's books are available on Amazon and Barns & Noble.  Pete co-authored Twenty-Two On Peleliu with George Peto who passed away on July 5, 2016, just one week after his last interview.  Because of the incredible memory of this old Marine and due to the reseach expertise of Pete, this is an incredibly detailed and very personal journal of events in the Pacific.  George was also a well documented historian, on his own, having provided the the voice-over for the Okinawa display at the WWII Museum in New Oleans, Louisiana.

I am sure that if you were to bring a copy of his book to a District meeting that you would be able to get it autographed.
