Americanism

Americanism

One of the four pillars that make up the foundation of the American Legion is Americanism.  It is our responsibility to remind the community and teach our youth about what it is that makes this country great.  We do this through our involvement in celebrating our Independence Day, Veterans Day and Memorial Day through parades and other post events and through several of our programs as follows:

Oratorical

The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. Since 1938, the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.  It has had such prominent Contestants as:
  • Former presidential candidate Alan Keyes
  • National television commentator and talk radio host Lou Dobbs
  • Vice-President of the United States Mike Pence.
The District will be holding it's Oratorical in early spring and can be found our Events Page.  Contact your local Post to be sponsored

Religious Emphasis

As The American Legion is pledged to service “For God and Country” and has continuously emphasized the spiritual foundations of our freedom, The American Legion Department of Ohio Religious Emphasis Committee believes that to preserve this freedom, we must continue to hold before the American people the spiritual foundations of our Country.  We recognize our post Chaplains by awarding  the "Father Duffy" award for the outstanding Chaplain of the year, as well as the Post Chaplain award for outstanding performance.
