Flag Retirement
The practice of retiring of unservicable flags has always been the respectful burning of them. Now, however, due to the material modern day flags are made from, that is now not legal as they will give off highly toxic gases. Proper methods at this time, to retire the flag that is not all cotton is as follows:
Burial: Place the properly folded flag in a dignified, respectful box (like a wooden container) and bury it.
Recycling (for cloth flags): For fabric flags, you can carefully cut out the embroidered blue star field (the "union") so it is no longer officially a flag, and then dispose of or recycle the separate pieces in a dignified manner
Alternative methods are being investigated.
